Hodges Appreciation Week

Poor Ben H is getting a bit of rough treatment at the moment, in both the fine sessions and on this blog. And lets face it, while some of this grief may be earned - he has not exactly performed to his very high standards so far this season (Ben B - thats a much better way of saying it than - he's having a f**ken shocker!'), but he is very valuable to this team. So I propose a Hodges appreciation week - lets show the big man some love - and post about our favourite Hodges moments and stories. Lets try to get at least 1 a day for the week. Perhaps it will spur on a brilliant game next week.

Umm, can someone else please go first - I got some thinking to do ...

Picture: Aaron and Ben comment on the general poor state of conditioning and bicycle-kicking ability amongst the younger Stallions.

My favourite Hodges moment was at Melrose Park. I was checking out the Baboons through the fence, and Ben snuck up and gave me a big fright. I jumped high into the air and shouted "Aarhg!". Nice one Ben, you really got me there mate!

Cheers Robin - you jumped like a girl.

My fav Hodges moment has been mentioned before, but hasn't had the full description. Last game of last season, afternoon game. We walk past Uni Raiders vs Marist. We played Marist the week before and had some encounters with their absolutly psychotic keeper. Ben walks past, casually asking him what the score was. After the reply 'we are losing 2-0' Ben tells the keeper how shit he is, the keeper comes back brilliantly 'at least I'm not ugly'. Within seconds the Raiders are on attack and the keeper charges out and full on body slams their striker, starting an all out brawl.

Good players have an impact on their own games. Only players of excellence can affect games they are not even involved in.

Sorry Robin, I lost your second comment through trying to be more tricky that I really am. But we covered the same stuff I guess ...

Recovered - here's what Robin had to say:

Oh yeah, and when Ben gave that aggro Goalie some shit from the sidelines before our game started, and the goalie got really wound up and ended up running out and punching a guy from the opposite team Ben Brooks-style the very next play. Nice one Ben!

Oh and it wasn't a baboon it was an emaciated prairie dog at 80yards. Rob was giggling like a school girl about it for days afterwards.

Come on Stallions, surely someone can share their experiences of coming inside Hodges.

He provides good assists.

I just wanna say it shows the measure of a man when he steps up in the area most needed and last year Hodges did that. We needed a striker - someone to finish goals and he did that.

This year the need isn't necessarily there with a few more natural strikers so Hodges has adjusted his play accordingly (and spends more time floundering around the midfield - sorry i just couldn't handle posting a compliment and not throwing in a cheap jibe).

Bottom line - I love Ben H.

Agreed, well not about loving Ben H. But he was Mr University Stallion last season (easily beating out those pretenders Lloyd and Patrick to that honour). That he was also the most fined says a lot about the man.

Strange how Hodges appreciation week ended up being the same as if it were 'take the piss out of Hodges week' - same story, same morals - but thats the measure of the man.
