Wgtn Utd Elite 2 v1 U.S melrose pk 24 May 2008 2.30pm

It couldn't last forever,the uni stallions winning streak ends at 5 with a 2-1 loss to a determined Wgtn elite side.

With both sides still settling into the game,U.S launched an attack started from the back and quickly worked up the field to Rob,who layed off a neat pass to Tristin and with nimble foot work in front of the defence,took a great shot giving the stallions an early lead.

Wgtn quickly regrouped and began to play an attacking style of football, the muddy conditions not helping either team,Wgtn trying to play through the middle a lot and keep the ball on the ground,really testing the limits of the stallions defence,creating numerous chances that failed to hit the target.

An attempted clearing kick was stopped by a blatant handball,somehow missed by the referee and the Wgtn utd player found time to set himself up and take a good volleyed shot, giving Wgtn utd a deserved equalising goal. 1-1 to cries of disbelief from the stallions, some who couldn't believe the ref hadn't seen the ball strike the players arm.i guess that's lower league football for you.

The stallions don't sit back or drop their heads although still not really settled into our own game we quickly regrouped and began to attack the Wgtn side out wide, Rob on the left and Darvid (from the 2nds) making good runs down the wings,our build up play in the centre of the park was good too, paddy and Aaron making a good fist of it in the middle.

The first half was probably 60 -40 to them i guess,they created a lot more chance than we did,our delivery to the forwards maybe wasn't the best at times but credit to utd had their defence well and truly organised.
They may have been upset to have gone into half time turn around at only 1-1.

Kicking off the 2nd half the stallions started the brightest and began a good passage of play,as we attempted to find a goal early.
While on one attacking foray,the stallions were almost undone by some quick counter attack down our right, from which a through ball to a utd player clearly(the ref called marginal from half way) offside,managed to take a shot only for the ball to cross the goal and out for a goal kick.

Our first corner of the game came in the middle of the 2nd half paddy's ball in,was cleared out only as far as the edge of the Wgtn utd box and the stallions took a strike on goal,the ball looping over the top of the cross bar,this and other unlucky misses would cost us,as late in the game Wgtn attacked down our right hand side and a low cross in was missed by our defence with one of their strikers on hand to dab the ball into the net giving Wgtn a 2-1 lead with only minutes to go.
We tried to grab an equaliser and pushed everyone forward, but the game ended with Wgtn elite running out the victors.
