University Stallions 1 Vs Nth Wellington Varsity 1

Friday night football and a capacity crowd witnessed two evenly matched teams battle for a draw at Te Whaea. It was standing room only with even Nick White having to jump over the fence to get in the ground before kickoff.

The Stallions took the field early to acclimatise to the surface and looked good in the warmups. Looking good in particular was Bob Hinkels who showed tremendous enthusiam (as per usual)to get shots off on goal. After the prematch handshakes, "Get on with the game.." nothing much happened in the first half. *insert your own recollections here*

0-0 at half time with both teams playing cautiously.

2nd half was a much more open affair and the Nth Wellington team opened the scoring after a shot from out side the box took a wicked bobble on the uneven surface and skipped past Kilford
in to the back of the net. *insert your own recollections here* 0-1 (70mins)

Once again the Stallions sparked in to life after going behind and won a succession of corner kicks. They flooded the box with 5mins to go and a delicious corner from Sawyer was met at the
far post by Bob Hinkels who soared above his marker and powered the ball home, top left corner. Hinkels celebrated his first goal of the season with a genuine look of surprise and a few 'jump for joys' ala '82 World Cup. 1-1 (85mins)

Hinkels had another chance a minute later, and White had a shot with the last kick of the game but couldn't convert. The Stallions nearly pulling off an unlikely win.

Attendance:38 (new club record)

This correspondent is off to South Africa following the All Whites, and covering the World Cup for the Kapi-Mana News. I will be back to play on the 10 July. Good luck Stallions!
