Nick's blog

Not sure if everyone got this, but it's a pretty good way of hearing about what is going on with Nick. Nick being Nick he sounds pretty positive about everything, and things seem to be progressing well.

Our chances of playing footy tomorrow...

Posted on Yellowfever as per an email sent to most clubs about chances of U.S playing Saturday

From CF
Please be aware that Capital Football has already received a significant number of complete ground closures (as well as restrictions) from the councils for this weekend.
The grounds even before last night’s rain were in pretty bad state and in some cases particularly water logged.

This will hugely affect the number of games we will be able to play over the weekend. Therefore, even though the weather tomorrow (and Sunday) may be okay, please expect a significant number of cancellations. The grounds simply aren’t available.

Please listen to the cancellations on Newstalk ZB tomorrow morning from 7am and/or the Capital Football website.

Well Rauru's email spoiled my countdown - i promised to talk up the wandering Stallion Robins return. Kinda glad - it was all getting a little much.

In reality I was less counting down the days to Robins return than to the incessant and totally undeserved fining of Graham which will inevitably follow. Must be all those years of suffering Graham as captain of the cricket team.

Anyhow welcome back Robin.

Elite Match report

Here
Photo: Corey 'who did a very good job of coming out and making himself as big as possible to stop the shot.' Its really former Sheffield United and England goalkeeper Willian Foulke.

Even Elite mention the Stallions great balls to feet. Must have been cause Aaron was away huh Tristin?

Oh yeah, and here is Spencer after his postmatch pie in the Elite clubrooms.

Yes, i know - we shouldn't focus on goal scoring

But its so much fun ...

Last year the race for the Golden Boot was so close - didn't it go down to the final game? This year it seems a one horse race. You could argue that now we are playing 3 legit strikers the goals would be split - but that would not explain why Tristin is scoring as many as he did last year, almost twice as many as the other strikers combined. And, tell me if I'm wrong here, but he seems to get a lot less fines for missing shots. And he bleats less about 'assists' and not been provided with good ball (as long as its at his feet). I guess you can say the Titanic beats the Albatross beats the Ginga. Odd to think of Tristin as the hare, Rauru as the tortise and Gus as Eddie the Eel. All that fathering perhaps ...

Now, I'm not criticising the strikers here, far from it. In fact I want some odds. I think Rauru will take the Golden Boot. But the odds better be long. Any takers?

As for the plate non-strikers prize for most goals - its more interesting there, Ben H a nose (or rather a dirty, dirty shin) in front. Jason will be eyeing up Corey's most goals scored by a defender prize. Shortest odds - Tangihaere scoring the most Oggies.

Most of all, I would love to see the Butcher score his first goal for the Stallions. Imagine the less than Mike fines.

Damn shame we are not counting all missed goals this season so we can't do those graphs calculating goals scored vs goals missed. That was fun. Corey would surely have the best ratio.

And just so Tristin doesn't get all the glory - you might score most of the goals, but according to our current poll you don't score the best ones. Cue expected Stallions rushing to the poll to make sure mine is outvoted ... Although it sounds as though one of the goals from last week's game might force its way onto the list - you know - Rauru's much fined 'assist' finished by Tristin. I didn't see it. A contender?

Lots of goals to come in the rest of the season, much more to come both in terms of numbers and quality. Bring it on.

Perhaps a best tackle post needs to be next - Hello Joe. Though Mike's terrible chop in the box to bring the pen against Magpies was delicate to say the least.

CAPITAL FOOTBALL DRAW FOR 27/28 JUNE: (2:30pm unless stated)

Karori Magpies V Karori Aces - Karori 3 (12.30);
Marist V University - Cobham (12.30).

Wgtn utd Elite 0 v 2 U.S Newtown park 20th june 09 12.30pm

A superb first half football performance one of, if not the best we've had this season was backed up with a solid 2nd half display as the stallions claim all 3 points in a game they were determined not to lose.

Not the nicest of days to be playing footy but it is winter so we deal with it, cold southerlies with intermittent drizzly rain the wind blowing generally across the field coming towards the stands, with the temperature unlikely to have gotten to double figures.

Newtown park is quite nice, I've only ever been there too watch football, so to get the chance to play was a bit of a treat.

The teams went about warming up at respective ends, then began their team huddles, I missed the start of ours but can only think it went something like Rauru:"boy's sh!t Corey is in goal for christ sake lets keep 10 players behind the ball at all times and hope like hell we can get something on the counter attack" I wouldn't blame him really if that was the case the last two times I'd played keeper we lost 2-1.

There was a more serious note to the talk however the team was rocked with news Nick White is expecting to spend some time in hospital and will require a lengthy period of re cooperation.
It was good to catch up with him after the game,All the team wish him all the best and hope for a fast recovery.
You're expected to start the next season in C.M Nick so get a wriggle on mate.

I honestly don't know what the pregame plan was before, but It was at that part of the talk where we decided to have a right old go and get the win, it sounds a bit corny but the team wanted to put in a great performance for Nick.

With Elite kicking off playing right to left from the stand side of the field, it was the Stallions who started the brightest, we went on the attack right from the start and put Elite under pressure early. The ball being passed around from front to back through the midfield with ease, it was like we'd practiced all week or something, Joga Bonito.

Elite had the first real chance of the game about 10 mins in their striker went one on one with our keeper after Jason slipped over trying to to turn and defend, coming out to meet him on the tip of the 18 yard box I sprawled to smoother his shot which ricocheted off my knee and back into general play which we cleared up field, with that my confidence got a huge boost and seemed to ignite the team into playing even better because we went on to dominate the next 20 minutes or so, the usual shanked clearances or silly passes weren't so evident from U.S today.

1st Goal.

We had stopped an Elite attack and I threw the ball out left to Spencer, a combination of my throw being a bit short plus Spencer taking a bit of time to react and claim the ball almost caused U.S to turn over possession, however Spencer did well to get a pass away it found it's way too Rauru who went on a nice run down the left before breaking into the box and sending a delightful little cross to find Tristin Waiting to punch the ball into the net to give U.S a lead and to be fair more than deserved, some great interplay by U.S to open them up 1-0 20mins

The game continued and Elite we're having the jitters a bit you know when things just don't go right, shanked passes, bad first touches,50/50's going the other way, it was this and our good performance which lead U.S to carry on a good period of domination moving the ball nicely from back to front looking after the football and the shots started to come.
Lloyd was enjoying his first game back from injury and was our Paul Scholes in midfield solid as a rock and dangerous curling a shot aimed for the top left hand corner only for the keeper to claim the ball,Logan too having a few shots from around the top of the box as well

2nd goal.
Having been awarded a corner Paddy sent in a ball that looked to be curling with the wind into the top left hand corner, it went right past the keeper and just before dipping in a defender slipped the hands up and padded the ball out of play their ref was right there and rightfully awarded U.S a penalty.
Tristin offered to let paddy take which he turned down so Tristin dispatched the ball into the back of the net to give U.S a 2-0 lead 25mins

We had our first goal kick of the game after 30 mins (i think),it wasn't really a good idea for me to be taking the goal kicks, our first (my last) was a shocker for those who play golf my kick didn't even make the ladies tee, I stubbed the ball out of the 18 yard box luckily to Jason who managed to get rid of the ball and save me a fair amount of blushes not that I was blushing already.

Elite managed to get a couple of corners and did have some forays into our half but we were defending brilliantly today and nothing was going to get past any of U.S.
Joe was the first Stallion this season to get a yellow card, a Joey Barton like lung at the ball and an Elite player as the ball was going out, the Elite player took exception to Joe's style and some pushing and shoving ensued followed by a yellow card.
The half would end with Elite on attack and as the half came to a close they had a shot go across the face of our goal only for it to out for a goal kick.

2-0 Stallions Halftime

Everyone was happy with the way things we're going, we all recognised we would need to stay focused as Elite would come out firing.

2nd half

We never really let them near our goal in the 2nd half they did have their chances but rarely did I recall them getting into our goal box to get a decent shot on goal they had a few corners but we dealt with them well, there were a couple of keeping errors which were mopped up nicely by the defence and we were unlucky not to score more ourselves in the 2nd half but Elites defenders were holding firm at their end of the park.

Their best opportunity came late in the 2nd half a free kick awarded 20 yards out just to the left of centre field saw them have a go only for it to be tipped over the bar for a corner which was cleared well

There were some funny moments angry man awards for both teams Mike had a collision with an Elite player and as play continued the Elite player got up and did his best incredible Hulk impersonation and began charging down the field at Paddy screaming "COME ON THEN" Paddy quite rightly cleared the ball up field leaving the Hulk to have to turn and retreat to defend, funny as hell.

Then we had Paddy and an Elite player get tangled up just outside our box on the left hand side the Elite player reacted to something Paddy had done (later found out to be a case of grabbing his meat and vege) and kicked out at paddy who was down on the ground, Jase the mus then did his best bouncer in a bar improv and tackled the guy away which lead to everyone getting all close up shouting etc the ref gave U.S the free kick which was good of him, he was bloody good all game really I thought he ref'd quite well,we cleared and the game carried on.

The Stallions would on to win a hard fought but deserved win 2-0 only our 2nd clean sheet this season.

Post match drinks?

People keen for some beers after the game at the park? There must be a game after so we can sit up in the stands and do the fine session there if people are keen. Payment of the beers can come out of the fine money if this is ok with you Jason (Ben is away so you have say over it). Unless people are keen to do a fine session later involving the ABs?

What happened a year ago...

With no game played yesterday, let's have a look back at past match reports and see what happened this time one year ago...

U.S1v4 Marist Inter Anderson pk 2.30 14.06.08

I don't even know where to begin in describing yesterdays performance,in fact I'd rather just forget about it to be honest, wipe it from the memory banks.

U.S slumping to a 4-1 loss at the hands of a Marist side eager to avenge their loss the week before by the same margin.

One of those sort of games for U.S where you don't get the bounce of the ball or rub of the green.

For the first 20 Min's the game could've gone either way,we played some neat footy, they did to, then inter scored after about 25 Min's and the flood gates opened.
The first goal was from some pretty sloppy play from U.S and probably so were the rest of the goals with the team really having a torrid time of it.
the second a complete and utter cock up, somehow the defence and goal keeper managed to all end up at the wrong end of the 18 yard box and the inter player had an open goal and a huge smile making it 2-0 after 35Min's.
Then there was the 3rd goal scored right on half time, don't ask me, it was from a corner and there were bodies everywhere, next thing the ball is in the net 3-0 half time.

Nick quite rightly at half time pointed out we could still get back into the game, alas any hope of that was rubbed out right after the break as inter bullied their way through the defence and after attempting to chip Graham (filling in in goal for brooks),the ball was parried into the waiting feet of an inter player and the shot was deflected into the back of the goal to have U.S staring at a humiliating 4-0 loss.

The game seemed to meander on for the next 25mins until Inters mongol retard goal keeper decided to have one of his famous brain fades, ran out of the goal mouth and charged down Gus(who'd been in the thick of it all day) with a blindside,Tristin saw red and rightly so,showing great restraint in not knocking him the fuck out,the inter goal keeper was ordered from the field and as he left made the comments to the effect he'd been planning to do that for a while. like i said, mongol retard(who wanted to continue it after the game finished, even as we were all getting into our cars). A knob of the highest order.

We managed to grab a goal back after that from a corner but it was all too late,Ben Hodges hot run of form continuing, our blackest day this season ending.

Let's remember this game for the fact we don't want it happening again, we're better than that this season our defensive record going into this game as well as our goal scoring speaks for itself we are a good side let's make amends by exacting revenge on Wgtn utd Tce next week who we should blame for this loss any way they were the team that thumped Inter 4-1 the week before.

U.S (starting) Graham,Aaron,Nick G,Jason,Corey,Robin,Ben H,Paddy,Joe,Tristan,Gus
(subs) Mike B,Nick W,Spencer

goals :inter 25mins,35mins 45mins,48mins

How could anyone get angry at him?

So cancellation saved me the inevitable angry at Tangi fine, but I'm working on it.

Anyho, I'm out of contact for week, so blog may go quiet with no reports/fines etc unless someone comes up with something to throw up.

Missing next weeks game too, so good luck. Redemption is just postponed for a week.

Today's game is cancelled...

Fines #2

Okay, most people managed to pay some of their fines last week (or had already paid some). People who haven't paid anything yet:

Graeme
Tristin
Corey
Jason
Joe
Lloyd (who owes the princely sum of $1.50)

This is how much people owe:

Gus - $39.00
Paddy - $23.50
Nick W - $21.00
Aaron - $18.50
Graeme - $21.00
Tangi - $18.50
Ben B - $26.00
Tristin - $34.00
Hodges - $18.50
Spencer - -$3.00
Corey - $34.50
Jason - $41.00
Joe - $39.50
Panda - $16.50
Rauru - $3.50
Mike B- $18.50
Lloyd - $1.50
Jamie - -$2.50

The fines are adding up pretty quickly, so people should pay some now if they can (particularly if they haven't paid anything yet). We've got a fair bit of money already, so what do people think of doing something before the cup starts?

Fines #1

Although the fines flew thick and fast the fine session (with one exception) was fairly calm.

Stallion - Gus (nice goal, another nice shot and some general good work)
Pony - Rauru (missed goal, claiming missed goal didn't happen, claiming missed goal shouldn't count as a missed goal, yelling at team mates that they "Know nothing about football).

MVP

3 - Tangi
2 - Paddy
1 - Mike

Tristin - having a negative impact
Rauru - Multiple fines for missed goal/s
Abusing finemaster and team mates
Multiple fines for trying to run the fine session
Gus - lame celebration
Hodges - 'midfield was exceptional'
Having Tangi clear the ball into Ben's back
Aaron - another angry at Tangi fine
Tangi - inability to talk in a non-angry voice
Everyone hates Tangi

University 2 v 1 U.S Nairnville park 6th June 2009 2.30pm

What a beautiful day for football it was on Saturday and for the first 45 minutes we were on fire, had a pretty good set up and scored a deserved goal, Logan scoring a ripper walking through a few of the opposition before burying it in the back of the net after 25 or so minutes.
We dominated most of the half although the other university team did have their chances too the most notable was when they cleared a corner and ran the length of the field only for the shot to hit the crossbar and then Brooks made this huge save as the ball was about to go in on our left hand upright he got a hand to it and forced it for a corner, nice one.

Our strikers were dancing around some of the defenders they had some pretty nice touches, turned a few inside out, but the almost open goal (only the keeper to beat) was just to much to contend with, if we played Gaelic football I'm sure we'd have scored shit loads of points but alas the aim of this game is to get the ball between the posts not send it way up over it.

The defenders well I think we held our own alright in the first half, had a few anxious moments but still we let ourselves down in the second half, just I dunno, shit really (me especially).

Maybe it was the state of the pitch on the turn around because things went pear shaped for U.S in the second half the 50/50 types of things weren't going our way, we seemed to get bogged down which isn't hard given the state of Nairnville park but everything changed, all for the benefit of University. fair play though they did play well.

Their goals
They scored both theirs in the 2nd half, the first has to rate the bullshitiest penalty decision since we got the last bullshit penalty decision against us when we played the magpies the other week Joe clearly got the ball from the striker who went down quicker than you could blink in the 18 yard box and their ref was waiting with his whistle for anything to gift them a goal as he pointed to the penalty spot, what a load of shit.

their 2nd was better though
We got pulled apart at the back after three of U.S went for the same guy outside the 18 yard box quite close to the left hand goal line a deflected clearance or pass I can't remember found it's way to another university player who crossed the ball and the free striker watched Mike pirouette around like a ballerina then he calmly headed the ball into the net, which they really couldn't believe because there was silence for about 3 -4 seconds while they comprehended the fact they had taken the lead from U.S.

We then spent 25 minutes running around in true stallions fashion, we tried ever so hard to get an equaliser but I think the opposition wanted it more, they held on and all the 50/50 stuff went their way in the end we couldn't get out of jail the University side going on to win 2-1

Stallions : Ben B,Corey,Jason,Patrick,Mike,Joe,Ben H,Aaron,Spencer,Logan,Rauru
Subs :Tangi,Tristin

Goals U.S Logan 25mins

So this is the third loss in a row, we have Karori Aces @ Kelburn park 12.30pm lets put a stop to this second half of the season slide we go on around this part of the season and lets get our act together and take all 3 points this weekend eh

Too Many?

For the first time this season we may be required to ask people to sit out. With the possible return of Lloyd, and with Joe dropping fatherhood duties for the afternoon, only Graham has said he's unavailable which means we have 15 (if Lloyd plays). If Lloyd is gonna sit out another week then we will be fine as Tristin can only play second half, and even though we are the 'away' team they reffed last time so we should do it this time.

In case you do feel like you need a break though, here is the list of people and the weeks they did not play. Not sure about week 7 when Aaron did the match report so no team list available (thanks for always adding that Corey) but I remember we only had 2 subs so it must have been more than just Nick and Corey away. It was the game Aaron scored the winner from outside the box so if you dont remember it the chances are you weren't there (although having it told to you hundreds of times may have created a false memory).

Ben B 2
Corey 7, 9,
Jason
Tangihaere 2, 5,
Joe 8, 9
Panda 1, 3, 8
Mike 1, 2,
Graham 2, 4, 8,
Paddy 5, 6,
Ben H 2, 4,
Nick W 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9,
Aaron 2,
Spencer 2, 8, 9
Rauru 2, 8
Tristin 3, 4,
Logan 6,

Jason is the only person not to have missed a game, and Aaron, Ben B, and Logan have only missed one each. If we do have too many then it'd make sense to come from this bunch.

Chants of the season ...

'He's fast, he's red, he talks like Father Ted, Robbie Keane.'

As a follow up to Rauru's 'best of' celebrations here is the BBCs chants of the season. Personal fave has to be 'Don't you wish your midfield had Kompany?'- class. Perhaps a Stallions chant needs to be developed to be sung by our 3-4 supporters?

Caketin even gets a mention.

Sorry for you poor souls on twitter who have got this post twice, or those who lurk on the YF forum from where I stole this.

Magpies Match Report ...

Here
Very brief - not quite Corey's magnus opus (Sorry dude, didn't realise it took all f**ken Sunday to write that - that's quite a drama - we should mix it up - How about this for an idea - The Pony needs to write up the match report? It will no doubt be less detailed than Corey's but could get quite funny ...)

Anyway, at least the Magpies call us fellow title contenders and apologise for the pen.

Fines

Good fine session at the ground after the game. It was useful having a game going on in the background as those who got distracted didn't notice how big their fines got.

Stallion - Graeme (good all round game, but particularly for the two goal line clearances).
Pony - Jason (for the tackles, fisticuffs, and post-game attempts to shift the pony focus onto others).

MVP - 3 - Graeme
2 - Tristin
1 - Ben B

Fines

Tangi - $6.50 for second own goal of the season
Ben B - 'ugly ballerina' attempted save
Rauru - launching into a 10 minute talk on the history of male ballet in New Zealand
Gus - ginga imitation
Paddy - Yelling at Jason 'Don't chop him' (about the guy that walking through everyone to score their second).
Paddy - Claiming he hasn't scored because he hasn't got into scoring positions
Paddy - Getting into a scoring position and firing a very wide shot
Hodges - Having to have his Dad come and separate him from the man he was marking
Rauru - (re: above) "Is little Hodges coming out to play?"

Fine payments are also starting to drift in slowly. It'd be good if the people that haven't played anything put some money in in the next week or two. Otherwise it'll risk adding up to a big payment at the end of the year.

U.S 2 V 3 Marist Kelburn park 30th may 09 12.30pm

An own goal, a piece of individual brilliance and a well taken free kick are 3 reasons University Stallions we're unable to take all 3 points at the hallowed Kelburn Park on Saturday.

Injuries, a Queens birthday long weekend and the birth of a child meant the Stallions stocks were going to be spread a little thin this weekend,so it was good to see U.S able to field a full team plus a couple of subs against a Marist side looking to move further up the ladder at our expense.

Marist kicked off and Both sides looked to apply pressure from the off, with both sides having a similar green coloured strip the only difference would be the colour of the socks, theirs white, ours well mostly black.

Their first.
The game was about 15 maybe 20 minutes or so old when Marist were given a couple of corners.
The first was saved brilliantly by Graham off the line,Graham had stayed on the left hand goal post and hooked the goal bound ball clear.
The second, we gifted them an own goal, Tangi rising at the front post to try to clear but the ball glanced off the top of his head into the back of the net. Unlucky boy.

Their 2nd.
This was simply individual brilliance, still stung by their cheap goal we found ourselves under a bit of pressure, their #6 got the ball just outside our 18yd box top left side,he then set about turning Jason inside out, not once, not twice but maybe 5 times, then when he finished playing with him he turned to paddy and did the same not as many times but still enough to give him the chance to take a shot on goal and he didn't mess that up either sticking it low into brooks right hand side of goal and all of a sudden we're 2-0 down after 25mins.

Now we were all a bit pissed about that, the goal was brilliant but the way we dealt with him wasn't, heads up we carried on and this time it was our turn to apply pressure on their goal.
Two cracking corners from U.S resulted in nothing but need mentioning as they really showed we can cause problems at set pieces even if we don't train.

Our first goal
We had Fraser who arrived to the ground intending to play for another varsity side but was a few hours early and rather than wait for them to show up he jumped on and had a game for U.S.
Playing out on the left hand side he gave the Marist side trouble from the time he got on the field
gaining the ball out left and delivering it into the middle of the field the ball was picked up by Tristin who loves shooting from anywhere and from about 20 yards sent a shot at the keeper who in all honesty should have saved it but the ball went underneath the keepers legs and was stopped only by the goal net 2-1 35mins gone.

The latter stages of the half I'm going to say was mildly dominated by U.S, we were desperate to get on level terms before the half time break but the equaliser wouldn't come.

2nd half.
With the Stallions wanting to get something from this game we went out and started really well looked dangerous and had more than our fair share of possession.

Their 3rd,
It was a bitter pill when the Marist 3rd goal was scored from what was one of the only forays up the field in the early stages of the 2nd half, against the run of play they had a player brought down, well he did most of it himself it just needed a Stallion to be there to make it look more dramatic.
Sitting 20yards out on the right hand side a Marist player stepped up and with a left foot curled a ball that looked like it was shot in slow motion into the back of the net giving the Marist side a 3-1 lead 60mins gone

The game got a bit feisty after that Marist have a few players who like to start aiming for shin pads first then the ball and words were exchanged between a few players at times about that fact.

The game though was still being played with goods spirits though until two incidents one a crunching tackle by Jason on a Marist player which led to a bit of pushing and shoving but nothing much more, the other was when we were trying to take a free kick in the Marist half and this short little gimp wouldn't move back 10 yards (little prick) so Jason had seen enough of these antics and picked the leprechaun up and drove him back the 10 yards in no uncertain terms.

our 2nd.
Their keeper is screaming to his players "EVERYBODY OUT OF THE BOX, OUT OF THE BOX"
From the resulting free kick we took a shot on goal the ball wasn't claimed by the keeper and with all his players out of the box, he spilled it into the path of Tristin who stuffed it into the back of the net and gave a bit of a chance taking the score to 3-2 70 mins

As hard as we tried our 3rd goal just wouldn't come we put enough pressure on them they held on well and we were left with zero points at the end of a game which we probably should have got at least one
